The 2020 East Asia Summit New Energy Forum Was Successfully Held

On 24th September, 2020, the 2020 East Asia Summit New Energy Forum hosted by the Department of International Cooperation of Ministry of Science and Technology (MOST) of P.R. China and Department of Science and Technology (DOST) of Yunnan Province, organized by Yunnan Academy of Scientific and Technical Information, Shanghai Science and Technology Exchange Center, China-ASEAN Innovation Center and China-South Asia Technology Transfer Center was successfully held in Shanghai. The theme of the forum is "Addressing the Challenge of Climate Change: The Mission and Future of New Energy", which is supported by Asian Regional Cooperation Fund.

The forum takes the form of online and offline "cloud conference", including the opening ceremony, online group photo, keynote speech, high-level expert forum, thematic session, Q&A and forum wrap-up session. Representatives from Shanghai attended the forum on the spot. Participants from East Asia Summit countries and other provinces and regions in China attended the forum through live broadcast.

Representatives from Indonesia, Malaysia, Laos, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, South Korea, the United States, New Zealand, Russia, India and other East Asia Summit countries and representatives of international organizations such as the United Nations Development Programme, IEA, ASEAN-China Centre, SAARC Energy Centre, Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia and other international organizations attended the forum online. Nearly 200 representatives of science and technology authorities, universities, research institutes and enterprises from more than 10 provinces and cities in China, including Beijing, Shanghai, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui, Fujian, Sichuan, Guizhou, Guangxi and Yunnan participated online and offline forum.

 

At the opening ceremony, Mr. Ruan Xiangping, First Counsel (Director-general Level) of the Department of International Cooperation of the Ministry of Science and Technology said that, green development and sustainable development have become the trend of the times and drawn attention worldwide. Currently affected by novel coronavirus pneumonia, the world and regional economies have been severely impacted, and all countries are facing severe challenges in how to achieve sustainable development. Realizing the energy transition as soon as possible has become the energy strategic choice of East Asian countries and an important measure to achieve regional sustainable development. China has always payed close attention to energy issues and regarded the development of new energy and renewable energy as a long-term strategy.

Mr. Xie Wenlan, Vice Chairman of Science and Technology Commission of Shanghai Municipality said that, Shanghai is moving steadily towards building a comprehensive and open science and innovation center, an important hub for global innovation networks and a source of international technology industry. As one of the most important clusters of China's scientific and technological resources and high-tech industry resources, Shanghai is actively promoting green, low-carbon and circular development, and accelerating the improvement of urban hierarchy and core competitiveness. For Shanghai, the new energy industry is a strategic emerging industry that needs to be vigorously cultivated and developed. Shanghai hopes to further strengthen international scientific and technological cooperation and exchanges with East Asian countries in the fields of new energy through cooperation with Yunnan and other provinces, and create a "technological community" of equality, mutual benefit and win-win cooperation.

In the keynote speech and high-level expert forum in the morning, domestic and foreign speakers mainly introduced the development and trend of new energy technologies and industries in various countries from macrocosmic aspects, and provided new ideas and directions for future international scientific and technological cooperation in the field of new energy. In the thematic session in the afternoon, domestic and foreign speakers mainly introduced the latest developments in their respective research fields from the technical level, and provided many key directions worthy of further discussion and cooperation for the technology supply and demand parties of the new energy industry in various countries. In the Q&A session, the online and offline experts had a lively discussion on technical issues of common concern.

Dr. MA Minxiang, Director-general of Yunnan Academy of Scientific and Technical Information summarized the results and achieved consensus results in four areas:

First, the development of new energy has great prospects and important social significance from a global perspective. Second, the progress of science and technology and the application of new technologies and new products are the fundamental way to solve various challenges and problems in the process of energy development. Third, cooperation in the field of new energy is a key method for scientific and technological cooperation among the East Asia Summit countries. Through the platform of the East Asia Summit New Energy Forum, the exchanges of talents, economy, trade and technology among the East Asia Summit countries can be better promoted. Fourth, it demonstrates the willingness and spirit of the international community to open up and cooperate, continue to strengthen multi-level communication, share knowledge and information, and jointly promote innovative cooperation in the new energy field of the East Asia Summit countries.

The forum provides an open exchange and cooperation mechanism for bilateral and multilateral innovation cooperation, transformation of achievements and promotion and application of new energy technologies and products for East Asia Summit countries in the field of new energy, and provides a platform of exchanges and collisions of ideas for the sharing of knowledge and technology among scientists worldwide, and also plays an active role in jointly promoting the development of new energy fields and scientific and technological humanities exchanges between countries.
