Sri Lanka is an island country in the Indian Ocean, with land area of 65610 square kilometers, population of 20,330,000 people (2012), and its agricultural population accounted for 70%. This country is a traditional agricultural producer, and the agricultural production of coconut, natural rubber and spice beverage crops is the important source of national income. However, due to its weak domestic economic basis, lack of scientific and technological support, processing technology and production management, its further development of agriculture has been seriously restricted.

In order to promote the "going out" of China’s tropical agricultural science and technology, to enhance Sri Lanka’s agricultural technology and agricultural science and technology innovation ability to accelerate its development of agricultural economy, Chinese Academy of Tropical Agricultural Sciences (hereinafter referred to as CATAS) cooperates with Sri Lanka Coconut Research Institute, Rubber Research Institute, Central Section Station of Spice and Beverage Crops to co-establish a China - Sri Lanka Tropical Agricultural Science and Technology Park. The park intends to cover an area of 33.33 ha (500 mu), the core area will be located in Coconut Research Institute of Sri Lanka, which is 25 km away from Sri Lanka's capital airport. With CATAS’ advantages of advanced tropical agricultural technology, achievements and talent, relying on the science and technology park, cooperative parties will carry out joint research, demonstration and promotion of new varieties and new technology, focusing on integration demonstration, cooperative research and technical training of coconut biotechnology and breeding, green pest prevention and control, soil nutrient management and fertilization technology of rubber plantation, small rubber tube seedling technology, standard planting and high value products processing technology of pepper and coffee. Besides, relying on this Science and Technology Park, we plan to establish a China - Sri Lanka Tropical Agricultural Technology Transfer Platform to spread China's advanced agricultural technology to Sri Lanka, for solving technical bottlenecks in the production of tropical agriculture of Sri Lanka to improve the level of agricultural production and economy. At the same time, this project will provide a platform for the transfer of China's tropical agriculture science and technology to South Asian countries, and to provide technology support for China’s agricultural enterprises in Sri Lanka, in order to expand effect of agricultural technology of China in Sri Lanka and neighboring countries, for the implementation of "One Belt One Road" strategy.
