The State Key Laboratory of Refractories and Metallurgy at Wuhan University of Science and Technology has a strong background in serving the high temperature industries with established expertise particularly in the areas of refractories and metallurgical engineering. It has undertaken and completed numuous national research programs since the beginning of “Sixth Five-Year Plan” including the National Key Technologies Research and Development Program, the national “973” program and “863” program, all of which are oriented towards fulfilling the demands for energy saving, emission reduction and sustainable development with a focus on solving the major or critical technological and/or commonality problems encountered in industries and/or in the development of the local economy. The current research focus of the Laboratory is on four areas: refractories design and processing technology，high temperature service properties and functionalization of refractories, metallurgical processes and high performance steels, and high-efficient utilization of special metallurgical resources and resources for refractories. The laboratory has got more than 30 national prize, provincial and ministerial level prize between 2010 to 2014. Among them, one second prize of national technical invention award, 4 second prize of national prize for progress in science and technology, 3 first prize of provincial and ministerial level prize, 307 application patents and 164 authorized patents. The Laboratory is committed to external exchange and cooperation. It has established close partnerships with industrial companies including Baosteel, WISCO. It has built up links with international research and education organizations as well as companies in USA, Germany and so on.

The Laboratory is devoted to the applied basic research and technological development in the fields of refractories and metallurgy with constant pursuing of innovation. It strives to become a national and international centre of excellence not only for scientific research but also for the development of talents.
